Lineage of Jacob Cornelis Kruize
Generation 1 Trijntje Sijbolts (his mother) Generation 2 Jacob Cornelis Kruize (1765-1822) Who was Jacob Cornelis Kruize?
Jacob was the illegitimate son of Tryntje Sybolts. We are uncertain as to who his real father was though naming conventions would point to his name being "Cornelis". Born in 1765 at Uithuizen, we have yet to locate Jacob's baptismal record to prove his birth year. Jacob lived his entire life as a farmhand eventually owning a small home which was still in existence in the early 1950s. Jacob married a peasant girl named Eiske Dam at the age of 23 in 1788. Together they had a total of 9 children. |

Where does the name Kruizenga come from?
In the early 1800s Napoleon conquered the Netherlands forming the short-lived United Kingdom of the Netherlands. Napoleon mandated each Dutch family to choose a surname in 1811 for taxation and military purposes. Prior to this the Dutch practiced the oft confusing custom of Patronymics, the passing of the father's name down to each child as a sort of surname. Many Dutch families already had surnames, but not all. The 1811 mandate forced all families to have one. Jacob Cornelis used the surname of "Kruize" prior to the year 1811. As Jacob was illegitimate, the Groninger custom was to name the child after the biological father. Jacob Cornelis was born in Uithuizen. There was a Jacob Kruizenga living in Uithuizen but he was married. It is possible that Trijntje was his servant or maid though this is only my hypothesis. In either case Trijntje Sijbolts became pregnant with Jacob Cornelis. I have yet to prove this hypothesis through Y-DNA testing. I would like to think that Jacob chose the surname "Kruize" upon the passing of his daughter Tryntje. This is the first time we see the name in use by Jacob. The name "Kruis" can mean "cross" as in "crosses over". But it can also be just a name: son of Kruiz. The suffix "inga" or "enga" means "son of". |
Where the Kruizenga family has its Origins.
The Kruize family originates from the far northeastern province of the Netherlands - in the Groningen Province. Our family has lived in this region since at least the mid-1700s. It is an area of land only 899 miles square with the Wadden Sea to its north and Germany directly to its east. The Groningen Province is flat farm land that really hasn't changed much over the centuries.
