Just a quick update. I am still searching through Dutch parish registries in search of the missing birth record of Jacob Cornelis. I've even broke out of the Groningen Province into adjacent Provinces: Drenthe and Friesland. So far I've come up blank. I am not a believer in brick walls and remain optimistic that a record will be located. On a separate note, David Heys has forwarded me a large assortment of photos he took of the Groningen/Netherlands area during his travels there in 2004. Very interesting. I've linked to these photos from the main page. My own trip to the Netherlands has been postponed. I had plans to travel alone but my wife insists on coming along. And since she has no vacation time left this year due to a recent internship, looks like we will not be traveling until 2012. I'll just have to dig up more information on places to visit. According to Jacob Cornelis' death certificate he was born in Uithuizen. If he was, he certainly wasn't baptized there. And I am beginning to doubt that he was born there at all. The death certificate is probably in error. Jacob's mother when married to Hindrik Jans was in Eppenhuizen where a daughter was born. Later (2 marriages) she is seen in Groningen. Dating back from the death certificate we can achieve the birth year of 1764 or 1765. The only Uithuizen records in that year with a Jacob are as follows: The above record is a good prospect: only one problem - the birth mother is shown as Gepke Tonnis. Could this be our Jacob? If he was born and baptized in Uithuizen - it would have to be. There are many reasons why a different birth mother could be written here. But... this is NOT our Jacob. Here is another record. So what's the problem? Same father, same mother, same name. According to Dutch naming customs, the first son was named after the father's father - which is Jakob (Kornelis Jakobs). The second son should be named for the mother's father - (Gepke Tonnis) or Tonnis. The reason this record gives the same name is because the first son died. Again, according to custom, if a son or daughter die - the next child is given the same name. Jakob (the 1st) died. Jakob (the 2nd) was born. And because the 1st Jakob died... this can not be our Jacob. The search continues... Stedum Archivist Historical Update 03/08/2011
I received a 3rd message from Stedum Historical Archivist Jeroen Hillenga. He tells us about the Eiske Jacobs Dam Kruizinga household (Jacob Cornelis Kruizinga had passed away). I have shared this message on the Jacob Cornelis Kruize page. Jacob Cornelis & Eiske Jacobs Stedum Home 03/04/2011
I received a message back from the Stedum/Loppersum historical archivist concerning the present existence of Jacob Cornelis home. The home no longer exists. It was destroyed sometime from 1953-1962. I was able to glean some additional information from what the archivist wrote. There was a population register of Stedum in 1830 in which Jacob's widow - Eiske Jacobs Dam - is mentioned as still living in the house of Jacob's death (no. 95) - with her daughter, son-in-llaw, and grandchild. Eiske died in 1838. Her daughter moved with her family to Westeremden (a nearby village). This daughter would have to be Stijntje - the last of Jacob's children. Eiske Jacobs Dam also appears in the register of real properties: she owned the home no. 95. This register, introduced in 1832, would not have included Jacob as he was deceased. The number of the home location (per the land registration record) is A44. It is not actually in Stedum but outside Stedum in an open field by a road that is called Hemerterweg (road to Hemert). This road still exists. I have posted pictures and full-length letters to Jacob's page. Click here. Jacob Cornelis Kruizenga 12/08/2009
