I overlooked something which could provide a wealth of information. On the 1900 Federal Census under the column "Naturalization" there is recorded a "PA". Not knowing what this indicated, I glanced over this column numerous times.
The Census taker was required to record in this column whether the individual was naturalized or not. Many immigrants did not take the time to become naturalized because it really didn't change their lives any. Their children were automatically American citizens if they were born here.
On Jakob's 1900 Census the "PA" is indicative of the fact that Jakob had filed his first papers toward becoming Naturalized. I do not know when these papers were filed, but the Naturalization index records two Jakob Kruizenga's in Kent County (which their were). Both records in the index are marked as having completed their second and final papers - meaning that they both had become Naturalized.
I am requesting these records today from the Michigan Archives. Will post further information as it is received.
