What does Kruize mean? In the early 1800s, Napoleon conquered the Netherlands and formed the short-lived United Kingdom of the Netherlands. As the Dutch citizenry practiced the confusing custom of Patronymics, the passing of the father's name down to each child as a sort of surname, Napoleon mandated each family to choose a name by 1811 for taxation and military purposes. Jacob Cornelis chose Kruize. But what does it mean? The name means "crosses over" or "passes" - this chosen because of the passing of Jacob's daughter Tryntje. Our surname memorializes Tryntje for all time. Beautiful.
Kruize "enga" or "inga" means "son of Kruize". Both are correct. In the Netherlands, the "inga" form takes precedence. |

The Kruize family originates from the far northeastern province of the Netherlands - in the Groningen Province. Our family has lived in this region since at least the mid-1700s. It is an area of land only 899 miles square with the Wadden Sea to its north and Germany directly to its east. The Groningen Province is flat farm land that really hasn't changed much over the centuries. Explore the Groningen Province through pictures. Alan Krusinger, a descendant of Jacob Jacobs Kruizinga, and David L. Heys, have both shared numerous photos with us from their travels to the region.
