Jacob Derk Kruizenga's Employer

  • Jacob Kruizenga worked for the L. M. Cutcheon lumber company where he became a foreman some time in 1890.
  • L. M. Cutcheon sat at 139 Bridge NW: the US 131 now runs through the area where the factory was located.  Besides the lumber yard, L. M. Cutcheon also had a sash/door/blind factory on Pearl St. near the river.
  • The Kruizenga home sat on the corner of 11th St. and Broadway (no longer there).  Five houses up the street was the Slooter place where Jacob's daughter Frances would meet her future husband Jacob Slooter.
  • Jacob was a life-long resident of Grand
    Rapids though he purchased a farm in Plainfield.  He only lived on the farm for a short while when he fell ill just before his death.

L.M. Cutcheon

L. M. Cutcheon’s Sash, Door and Blind Factory.--L. M. Cutcheon established this business and erected a factory in 1878. He is enjoying a good trade, shipping a large portion of his product to the East. The machinery is of the latest improved pattern, and the work is first class in every particular. Mr. Cutcheon also owns a lumber yard, at 139 West Bridge street, where he carries a stock of $8,000 in all kinds of fine lumber, and has a good trade.

Arthur Webster, foreman at Cutcheon's sash and door factory... came to Grand Rapids in 1865.  He has been married twice, and is the father of six children, four of whom are living... In 1876 he engaged in the manufacture of sash, doors and blinds at the west end of Pearl street bridge, which he continued until 1878, when he sold to Mr. Cutcheon, for whom he has acted as foreman up to the present time.
