The Michigan lineage of Kruizengas descends from the 4th son of Jacob Cornelis Kruize named Derk Jacobs Kruizinga. Derk Jacobs was born on 12 November 1796 in Stedum. He took on the name of his older brother Derk who passed early in life. On 28 December 1818 in the village of 't Zandt, Derk Jacobs married Gerritje Jans Knol, a maidservant. Gerritje's father was Jans Klaasens Knol, a day laborer and her mother was Aaltje Melles. As a side note, Gerritje was born and died at 't Zandt. Derk Jacobs worked as a farm hand and a day laborer. He and his wife raised a family near the village of 't Zandt. The satellite photo of their home (still in existence) is shown at right. Derk Jacobs lived to be 68. He died on 30 Sept 1865 at Leermens gem, 't Zandt.
