1880 - Another Federal Census was taken. Jacob Derks is now listed as a farmer and Jennie as housekeeper. The Kruizenga family lives on a farm in Plainfield township. Children yet living at home include: Nettie (housemaid, 18), Frances (housemaid, 14), Derk (attending school, 11), Henry Witte (16, stepson), and John Witte (13, stepson). The family has hired live-in help: Henry Brommelle (22) and John Burr (18).
1889 - The Grand Rapids City directory shows Jessie Kruizenga living at 45 Paris in Grand Rapids - keeping house. The same directory shows sister Carrie boarding 349 Broadway. Carrie works for the J A Eaton Co. as a cashier.
1890 - The Grand Rapids City directory lists Jessie Kruizenga boarding 234 Lyon in Grand Rapids. Carrie lives at 349 Broadway and now works for H B Claflin & Co. as a cashier. Jacob Kruizenga is listed as having a 2nd location at 349 Broadway - same address as Carrie. Jacob has been promoted to the position of foreman at L M Cutcheon.
1890 - Henry Witte, Jennie's last surviving son from a previous marriage, is listed in the Grand Rapids City Directory by the name of Hendrik Kruizenga. He works as a lather - most likely at L M Cutcheon with Jacob. Hendrik has as a 2nd location - 428 Logan.
1900 - US Federal Census is taken. Jacob Derks household now consists of Jacob, Jenthe (Jennie), and Derk. From this census it is revealed that Jennie emigrated in 1868 and was born in the Netherlands. Jacob is 70. Jennie, 62. Derk is 21 and listed as a farmer. Jacob and Jennie have been married for 23 years. The Kruizenga farm holds a mortgage. Now both Jacob and Jennie can read and speak English, but neither can write it. One of the adjoining properties to the Kruizenga farm is the Klooster farm from where young Derk will marry Katherine (Kate) - now 16.
1900 - Carrie is 40 and still single. Both Carrie and Jessie will remain single their entire lives. Carrie lives with her sister Nettie in Grand Rapids. Nettie has married John M. Hendricks.
1905 - Jacob Derk's third wife Jennie dies. She is buried at Greenwood. She was 68.
March 22, 1905 - Derk Jacob Kruizenga marries Katherine (Kate) Klooster, daughter of Gerrit Klooster - a neighbor.
October 7, 1906 - Jacob Derk Kruizenga dies of general paresis contributed to by acute dysentery. His son Derk Jacob is the death certificate informant. Jacob Derk is buried at Greenwood though he is not the last to be buried there. Jessie and Carrie will later be buried there.
