Daughters by Marriage - Not Blood Relation
Jane (Jennie) Treen
Jennie was inherited by marriage. She was born in 1857 to Adolphus & Gezina Vanbraak in Michigan.
Jennie married into John G. Treen on 4 Dec. 1884. The couple had three children listed on the 1900 Census: Arther E. (14), Grace E. (11), and Ray E. (9). 1910 Census reveals that Jennie - now 52 - is divorced - unusual for that time period. Jennie lives at 317 Pleasant in Grand Rapids.
In 1930, according to Census, Jennie lives with her daughter Grace (a widow) and her grandson Donald at a rental house at 134 Eastern Ave. Grace works as a bookkeeper for an embalming company.

Henrietta
Henrietta was inherited by marriage. She was born in 1855 (1870 Census) to Adolphus & Gezina Vanbraak in Michigan. Henrietta married Theodore Kemink, a druggist, on 22 Dec 1875, and lived at 173 Eleventh St. in Grand Rapids, Michigan - just a few houses down from her sister Minnie. The 1880 Census lists the couple as having a 1-year old son - Eugene L. Some time between 1880 and 1888, it is assumed that Henrietta died as Theodore Kemink has a new bride listed on the 1900 Census - having been married 12 years (1888).
Minnie
Minnie (Mena) was inherited by marriage. She was born on the 6th of June to Adolphus & Gezina Vanbraak in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Minnie married John A. Verkerke on the 28th day of December, 1876. The couple lived at 140 Eleventh St. (1880 Census) just down the street from sister Henrietta. The couple had a 1-year old son listed on same Census - Fred J. Minnie died in 1904. She is buried at Garfield Park Cemetery in Grand Rapids.
Fanny Vos
Not completely sure about Fanny. She was born on March 24, 1864. That was the same year that Jacob Derks married Fanny's mother Gezina (in May). Gezina's former husband Adolphus had died in the Civil War (1862). So it would not have been possible for Adolphus Vanbraak to be Fanny's father. But... there could have been a brother of Adolphus. Uncertain.
In any case, both Jessie and Carrie's obituaries list Fanny as a "sister". For that is how she would have been known to them. They would have been close - blood or not. They grew up together.
Fanny (Fannie) married John J. Vos (some time between 1883-86). Marriage records maiden surname as Van Brack. As a widow she later moved to Los Angeles, California where she died on the 30th of December 1944.

The above 1880 Federal Census seems to clarify at least the fact that Fanny considered herself a Van Brack and not a Kruizenga. In 1880, at the young age of 17, Fanny was one of several boarders at 129 Monroe. She was employed as a clerk at an unidentified store.
If this is true, and Fanny is indeed a Van Brack (Braak), then Jacob married Zena when she was already with child. For Adolphus, as previously mentioned, died in 1862. And it could be possible that Fanny is neither Jacob's nor Zena's. Perhaps she was a brother or sister? There is the fact of the mysterious Uncle William buried on the Kruizenga plot at Greenwood. Who was he? Evidently relation of Zena's. Could William be a brother of Zena - and Fanny his child - but given the Van Brack name? Or was William the brother of Adolphus - and Fanny his child taking his surname? Another mystery yet to be unraveled.

Nettie was born Aug. 1861 to Jacob Derks & Janna (first wife) Kruizenga. In 1882 (age 21), Nettie married John M. Hendricks. John was born in Sept. 1859 in Michigan. John was employed as a US Mail Carrier.

In 1920, John was still employed as a postal carrier (age 60). Nettie (58). And their daughter Louise, a saleswoman for a hardware store (age 29) lived at home. Lives at 329 Wealthy which is owned.

Frances (Kruizenga) Slooter
Frances was born in May of 1866. She may be the first child between Jacob Derk and Gezina: I say maybe because I am not certain about Fanny.
Frances married at the age of 19 to Jacob F. Slooter (born 1865). The 1900 Census reports that Jacob was a broom maker. In fact, Jacob was part owner of Slooter Brothers - a company that specialised in broom production - located at 371 Broadway in Walker Township.
As Jacob had a 2nd residence right down the street from the Slooters, this is most likely where Frances would have met her future husband.
As of 1900, the couple had but one child - a son - named Frank J. It would appear that this is the sole child of the couple.
The younger Frank J. was born in June of 1886. In 1910, the couple lives at/owns 345 Broadway St. Jacob is now 45, Frances is 43. Living with the couple is Frank J. (23) and his wife of 4 years - Marie (21) along with their child Frances (3). Frank J. is employed as a plumber.
Frances is buried at Greenwood on the Slooter lot with Frank J., Jacob F., and Marie B.. The Slooter lot is in section "P" right across the road from the Kruizenga lot.

Derkje "Della" Kruizenga
Della sadly died at the age of 4. 1868-1872. She was the daughter of Jacob Derks and Gezina. Uncertain what she died of.
| Zena Kruizenga
Zena died at 6 months on June 20, 1871. She is the daughter of Jacob Derks and Gezina. According to Kent County Death records, Zena died from "fits" an older term for seizures/epilepsy. She is buried at Greenwood.

And Henry Witte?
And what became of Henry Witte - the last surviving son of Jennie (Witte) Kruizenga's former marriage?
Henry married Lena Scharr on 27 June 1889. The couple had two children who both passed. Lena died in 1899. Henry married Johanna De Kraker on 20 Sept. 1900. 1910 Census tells us that he lives at 292 Broadway St. The couple has two children: Eveleen (6) and Irene (1). Henry works as a plumber. 1920 Census reveals he emigrated in 1868 and owns his own plumbing company. 1930 Census tells us he owns/dwells at 426 Knapp St. He is one of the few that has a radio - an indicator of financial status. Henry is buried at Fairplains Cemetery as is his wife Johanna and his daughter Irene. |
